There was oxygen tubing beneath my nose.
A doctor was standing beside me.
“What happened?”
He explained that the fainting episode might have been connected to strong pressure around a sensitive area of my neck, with exhaustion and dehydration possibly making things worse.
My hand immediately went to my neck.
“Is there a mark?”
The doctor hesitated.
“Yes. And it will probably be visible for several days.”
My stomach dropped.
“Where is the man who was with me?”
“He called the ambulance.”
I closed my eyes.
But the doctor wasn’t finished.
He looked uncomfortable for a moment before saying,
“Ma’am… we also had to contact your family.”
My eyes flew open.
“Who?”
The doctor answered quietly.
“Your husband.”
My blood ran cold.
And then I heard footsteps outside my room.
They were coming closer.
The door handle began to move.
My hand instinctively covered the dark marks on my neck.
And I realized there was absolutely no way to hide what I had done.

PART 2
The door opened.
Robert walked in.
He didn’t say anything.
At first, he looked directly into my eyes.
Then his gaze slowly moved downward.
To my neck.
To the dark marks I had desperately tried to cover with my hand.
I saw the exact moment he noticed them.
“Robert…”
My voice barely came out.
He walked toward the bed and sat in the chair beside me.
I waited for him to shout.
I waited for him to demand the man’s name.
I waited for him to tell me that our marriage was over.
Instead, he sat there in silence.
Finally, he said,
“I thought you didn’t want me anymore.”
Tears immediately filled my eyes.
“I thought you didn’t want me anymore.”
For the first time, Robert looked directly at me.
“You really believed that?”
I didn’t have the strength to hide anything anymore.
So I told him.
I told him about the lingerie.
About the candles.
About all those nights when I tried to get close to him and felt him pull away.
“I felt disgusting, Robert,” I whispered. “I would look in the mirror and think you couldn’t even see me as a woman anymore.”
His expression changed.
“Oh, God, Linda…”
“I know what I did was wrong. I’m not trying to excuse it. But I wanted one night… just one night… to feel like someone still desired me.”
Robert lowered his head.
When he finally spoke, his voice sounded different.

“It wasn’t you.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
“It wasn’t your body. It wasn’t your age. And it certainly wasn’t because I stopped wanting you.”
I couldn’t understand.
Robert placed his hands on his knees.
“Two years ago, my doctor told me I had a heart condition.”
I froze.
“What condition?”
“I didn’t want to frighten you. I was taking medication. The doctor told me I needed to be careful about physical strain.”
I stared at him.
“That’s why you kept pulling away from me?”
He nodded.
“At first, I was scared. And then every time you came close to me, I thought about what might happen if something went wrong right there beside you. I knew you would blame yourself.”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Robert gave a bitter little smile.
“Because I was ashamed.”
“Of me?”
“Of myself.”
His voice cracked.
“Of getting old. Of realizing I wasn’t the same man you married.”
Tears started rolling down my face again.
All that time, I had believed I was the only one terrified of aging.
But the man sleeping beside me had been living with the same fear.
We simply hadn’t spoken about it.
I reached for his hand.
“I cheated on you.”
